Types and Procedure of Abdominoplasty


 Traditional /Complete abdominoplasty

 This option is for patients who need the most correction  and have a sizeable amount of loose skin to remove from their midsection , The incision is made low on the abdomen  usually extends  from hip bone to hip bone,  the surgeon then  shapes the skin and muscle as needed, you will also have   an incision around the navel. Liposuction is often used to refine the transition zones


 Partial or mini abdominoplasty

Mini abdominoplasty is done with shorter incisions and often performed on patients whose fat deposits are located below the navel ,During this procedure your belly button will not be moved , this surgery may also be performed with an endoscope.Its generally recommended for patients who want to get rid of that pouch of skin or mini amount of stubborn belly flab.


 Extended abdominoplasty

An extended abdominoplasty is a complete abdominoplasty plus a lateral thigh lift , In this procedure excess skin and tissue is removed not only from abdomen, but also from hips , thighs.


High Lateral tension tummy tuck

This is advanced technique , in conventional abdominoplasty muscles are tightened in vertical line , whereas in high lateral tension tummy tuck in addition to vertical tightening the muscles are also tightened horizontially , so the final result is flat abdomen with significantly defined waistline.


Floating abdominoplasty or FAB Technique

This new technique also known as extended mini abdominoplasty, In this a small incision is made  , through this smaller incision , excess skin is removed and the belly button is temporarily detached , the muscles are tightened and reshaped , the skin is then tightened and belly button reattached. Liposuction may also be performed to achieve desirable results


Circumferential abdominoplasty

This surgery is an extended  abdominoplasty  plus a buttock lift,  it also  includes the back area, allows the removal of both skin and fat from the hip and back areas , which improves the shape of  your body three dimensionally , it is most appropriate for patients who have undergone massive weight loss.


Combination procedures

An abdominoplasty can be combined with liposuction to make a lipotuck which performs body conturing around hips , thighs and buttocks .It can also be combined with liposuction contouring , breast reduction , breast lift .


Abdominoplasty Procedure

Depending on the results you want, this procedure can take anywhere from one to five hours

Step 1 –Anaesthesia

Step2-Incision will depend on the type of abdominoplasty and the amount of excess skin, once the abdominal skin is lifted, the surgeon will then manipulate and shape the underlying weakened muscles as needed

Step3- After your surgery, your incision site will be stitched and bandaged, you may have to wear an elastic bandage or compression garment . Your surgeon will also instruct you on how to best position yourself to help ease pain.

After the procedure in first week

You can experience

  • Bruising
  • Tightness
  • Swelling
  • Mild to moderate pain

You may need to take oral pain medication for 5-7 days

Your drains will be removed after day two

You will need to avoid exercise , work , alcohol and smoking about 4 weeks following surgery
